How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. List NMFC 50317 and Class 70 on the BOL using the wording “Compounds, tire puncture, rim sealing, or tire balancing” to match the tariff description.
  2. Pack in sturdy boxes; for pressurized cans, use fiberboard dividers and apply Limited Quantity marks if eligible, or full hazmat marks, labels, and 24‑hr emergency contact when required.
  3. Weigh each carton accurately since rating is fixed at Class 70; add orientation arrows, keep away from heat, and line boxes with poly/absorbent to mitigate leaks.
  4. Review Note 50318 for exceptions and any drum provisions, and confirm carrier acceptance when shipping forms other than boxed pressurized cans.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable Class 70 helps tire dealers and auto service distributors secure consistent LTL rates versus higher classes common to chemicals and aerosols.
  • No density calculation reduces paperwork and reclass disputes, cutting accessorials and admin time on quotes and audits.
  • Proper hazmat presentation lowers refusal risk, shortens dwell time, and can qualify Limited Quantity to reduce fees when permitted.
  • Clear NMFC mapping standardizes BOLs across locations, improving training speed and compliance for fleet and aftermarket supply chains.
