How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use UN-rated corrugated boxes with compatible inner containers and absorbent material to contain potential leaks from vulcanizing compounds.
- Declare hazmat at booking, include the correct UN/NA number and hazard class on shipping papers, and affix DOT labels on each box.
- Weigh each box accurately and rate it at Class 85; this item is weight-based and does not use density for classification.
- Shipping in drums instead of boxes? Verify the correct NMFC line item, as this entry covers boxed vulcanizing compounds only.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 simplifies quoting and reduces reclass charges from density disputes.
- Proper hazmat packaging and documentation prevent fines, delays, and carrier refusal, protecting delivery timelines.
- Boxed presentation improves LTL compatibility, cutting risk of spill-related accessorials and remediation costs.
- Clear classification streamlines procurement and budgeting for tire retreaders, rubber goods makers, and service depots.
