How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm formulation limits: barium sulfate base with no more than 10% other ingredients; keep a spec sheet or SDS handy to show carriers if asked.
- Package in sturdy boxes or closed-head drums with moisture barriers or poly liners to prevent caking and leakage of this dense, inert powder.
- Rate by weight at Class 55; record net and gross weights accurately on the BOL, especially for heavy drums where pallet and packaging tare add up.
- Palletize tightly—stretch-wrap, corner-board, and band drums or boxed pails; mark “Keep Dry” and avoid overstacking due to high unit weight.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Low Class 55 keeps LTL costs down for dense mineral powder, improving margins on routine restocks for imaging and lab suppliers.
- Non-hazardous status simplifies booking and eliminates hazmat fees, widening carrier options and reducing transit delays.
- Weight-based rating delivers predictable quotes without density studies, streamlining procurement and automated rate shopping.
- Clear packaging guidance (boxes or drums) cuts claim risk, minimizing rework and protecting product integrity over long hauls.
