How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Request a forklift with long forks or a spreader bar and nylon slings; clay shells can crack under point loads.
- Crate or cradle the tank using timber saddles and rubber pads; band with edge protectors and mark clearly: Do Not Stack.
- Place low and centered over axles, block ends to prevent rolling, add anti-slip mats, and strap using a 4-point pattern.
- On the BOL, list NMFC 50650, note Fragile—Earthenware, add Do Not Top Load, and include crane or limited-access delivery needs.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Reduce breakage and claims by supporting brittle clay structures correctly, preventing costly replacements and jobsite delays.
- Faster quotes and fewer reclasses with an item rating (Class N/A), avoiding density disputes and reweigh fees.
- Clear accessorial planning curbs surprise charges for crane, off-road, or residential delivery and avoids detention.
- Protected routing—partial TL or careful LTL—lowers risk of handling damage and improves total landed cost.
