How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify per-piece weight. At 25 lb or more, you can ship loose or on skids; under 25 lb, place each body in cartons or crates.
- Protect machined faces and ports with caps, VCI wrap, and blocking to prevent nicks and rust during LTL handling.
- Mark BOL with NMFC 50800 and describe as “pipeline strainer body—machined, further machining required,” including piece count and each-piece weight.
- Choose packaging type accurately (packages or loose) and note that this entry is weight-based, not density-based, when requesting quotes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Eligible loose shipping for 25 lb+ pieces can cut packaging labor and material costs.
- Correct NMFC use reduces reclass and inspection charges, stabilizing LTL freight rates.
- Surface protection lowers scrap and rework at the machine shop, improving throughput and delivery reliability.
- Non-hazardous designation broadens carrier options and simplifies scheduling across lanes.
