Notes

Note 50952: NOTE-Also applies on accompanying connections or fittings of aluminum, plastic, rubber or steel not in excess of 10 percent of weight upon which charges are assessed.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify applicability: drainage/sewer or other underground-use conduit and fittings made of bituminized fiber or indurated material, shipped in packages. Then consult Notes 50952 and 50953 to select the exact NMFC item/class.
  2. Bundle straight pipe with banding and cushioned end caps; use cradles or V-blocks on pallets to prevent ovalizing. Add corner protectors under straps to avoid cutting into the fiber wall.
  3. Prevent crush and staining: avoid top-stacking heavy freight, use slip sheets or poly wrap to isolate asphalt/pitch surfaces from other cargo, and limit high-heat exposure during summer linehauls.
  4. Document specifics on the BOL: pipe lengths and diameters, fitting types and counts, material (bituminized fiber or indurated), and note non-hazardous. Apply “Do Not Stack” or “Fragile—Crush Sensitive” labels where appropriate.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Correctly using Notes 50952–50953 aligns the shipment with the right NMFC item, reducing reclass fees, rebills, and transit delays.
  • Lightweight yet bulky profiles benefit from smart palletization to control cubic capacity charges and accessorials for long lengths.
  • Stronger bundling and edge protection cut handling time and lower claim risk on crush-sensitive fiber conduit and fittings.
  • Non-hazardous designation broadens carrier choice and keeps transit options flexible for project-driven delivery windows.
