How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack strips or roll-form connectors in rigid cartons with edge guards; band tightly to stop unwinding or telescoping, then palletize for LTL.
- Add moisture protection for the sheet steel—poly wrap or VCI paper—and keep the fabric side protected from abrasion to preserve the sound-deadening layer.
- Palletize cartons in a single flat layer to avoid flat spots; use corner boards and two-way strapping to prevent shifting in transit.
- List the NMFC item on the BOL: duct connection material, sheet steel and fabric combined, in packages; include piece count and note Class 60.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 simplifies quoting and reduces reclass risk compared with density-based items.
- Nonhazardous status streamlines carrier acceptance and minimizes accessorial delays.
- Package-first handling cuts edge damage and kinked strips, lowering claims and replacement costs.
- Clear NMFC wording on the BOL speeds check-in and helps secure better LTL rates for HVAC projects.
