How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Specify gauge (17 or 18) and whether spouts are flexible or rigid on the BOL to guide correct packaging and handling.
- For long rigid sections, bundle with steel banding and edge protectors, cap both ends, and secure to 4-way pallets to avoid overlength and shifting.
- Coil flexible spouts to a stable diameter, strap to a skid, and shield with corrugated or plywood to prevent kinks and crush damage.
- Note the longest piece length (e.g., 8–12 ft common in elevators) as this can trigger overlength fees; include exact count and fittings in your quote request.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Clear identification of iron grain spouts reduces reclass disputes and unexpected carrier adjustments.
- Optimized bundling and palletizing help avoid overlength and linear-foot charges, lowering total LTL cost.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and speeds dock acceptance during peak harvest seasons.
- Standardized pack-outs enable reliable consolidation from fabricators to grain elevators, feed mills, and malt houses, improving transit predictability.
