How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State on the BOL: iron grain spouts, flexible or rigid, 16 ga+; include piece count, longest length, and end style (plain, flanged, coupler) for accurate handling.
- For rigid sections, cap and tape both ends, add edge guards, and strap 3–6 matched pieces into a timber-framed bundle on a pallet that fully supports the length.
- For flexible sections, coil to pallet footprint, tie every 12–18 inches, bag to keep fines out, then stretch-wrap and band with a protective top frame to prevent crush.
- Plan for length surcharges—when parts approach common thresholds (8–12 ft), nest or ship shorter modules, or choose carriers equipped for long freight.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Conduits group alignment streamlines rating and lowers reclass risk, keeping quotes consistent with invoices.
- Durable 16-gauge iron lowers damage incidence, reducing claim costs and downtime at grain handling sites.
- Bundling, nesting, and proper pallet sizing cut accessorials and dock labor by minimizing linear feet and touchpoints.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and eases paperwork, improving service reliability and transit planning.
