Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
53370.00 Coral, crude, not crushed nor ground, in bags, boxes or drums 55

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Pack crude coral pieces in strong corrugated boxes with an inner liner to contain fines; fill voids with kraft, foam, or molded inserts to limit chipping.
  2. Palletize on 48x40 GMA pallets with no overhang; use corner boards, two straps, and stretch-wrap for unit integrity. Mark heavy boxes and avoid double-stacking if carton strength is limited.
  3. Write the BOL line as: “Coral, crude, not crushed nor ground, in boxes – NMFC 53370, Class 55” with accurate piece count and total weight.
  4. If trading natural coral internationally, confirm any required wildlife or origin documentation, and avoid co-loading with liquids or damp goods that could weaken cartons.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 55 eliminates density calculations, reducing reclass disputes and audit fees.
  • Lower class yields more favorable LTL rates versus fragile, higher-class mineral items.
  • Non-hazardous designation broadens carrier options and speeds tender and pickup timelines.
  • Standard box-and-pallet handling improves cube efficiency and simplifies consolidation with other mineral shipments.
