How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify product fit: includes cordage, rope, string, or twine other than wire rope. If steel wire is present, classify under the wire-rope item instead.
- Calculate density per Item 170. Weigh each carton or reel and compute cubic feet; density = weight (lb) ÷ cubic feet. Example: a 45 lb reel measuring 16×8×16 in is ~1.18 cu ft, ~38.1 pcf.
- Package correctly for mode: coil cordage tightly in strong cartons, or ship on reels with flange protectors. Strap reels to pallets, chock the roll, and wrap to prevent unwinding and scuffing.
- Document clearly on the BOL: list NMFC 53395, packaging type (box or reel), actual weight, and calculated density. Separate line items if densities differ to avoid reclass.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Density-based pricing control: tighter coils or efficient boxing can raise pcf and potentially lower the class, reducing LTL spend without compromising protection.
- Lower claims and fewer delays: reels or reinforced cartons keep cordage from tangling or crushing, improving OS&D performance and customer satisfaction.
- Cleaner quotes for distributors: one NMFC covering cords, rope, string, and twine simplifies rate requests across varied SKUs and lengths.
- Compliance that prevents surprise fees: following Item 170 and listing density accurately minimizes reweigh/reclass charges and keeps shipments moving.
