How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack crude coral pieces in strong corrugated boxes with an inner liner to contain fines; fill voids with kraft, foam, or molded inserts to limit chipping.
- Palletize on 48x40 GMA pallets with no overhang; use corner boards, two straps, and stretch-wrap for unit integrity. Mark heavy boxes and avoid double-stacking if carton strength is limited.
- Write the BOL line as: “Coral, crude, not crushed nor ground, in boxes – NMFC 53370, Class 55” with accurate piece count and total weight.
- If trading natural coral internationally, confirm any required wildlife or origin documentation, and avoid co-loading with liquids or damp goods that could weaken cartons.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 55 eliminates density calculations, reducing reclass disputes and audit fees.
- Lower class yields more favorable LTL rates versus fragile, higher-class mineral items.
- Non-hazardous designation broadens carrier options and speeds tender and pickup timelines.
- Standard box-and-pallet handling improves cube efficiency and simplifies consolidation with other mineral shipments.
