How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use fixed Class 85; list NMFC 53890 and the exact packaging (box, crate, or roll) on the BOL to prevent reclass and inspections.
- For rolls: install core plugs and end boards, stretch-wrap the outside, then band to a pallet with chocks to stop telescoping during LTL handling.
- For boxes/crates: add a poly moisture liner to protect cork, cushion edges to prevent abrasion, and mark Top Load Only if layered sheets could crush.
- Quote precisely: include piece count, palletized dimensions, and any non-stackable notes—density does not change the class for this item.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing via fixed Class 85, reducing surprise reclass fees and billing disputes.
- Faster quoting and tendering because no density calculation or breakpoints apply.
- Lower claim risk when rolls are stabilized and cork kept dry, avoiding costly replacements for flooring underlayment or gasket stock.
- Right-size packaging: crates for export durability or boxes for domestic LTL, minimizing accessorials with clear labels and compliant pallets.
