Note 53912: NOTE-Also applies when mixed with not to exceed 5 percent by weight of other ingredients.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State the commodity clearly on the BOL: “Corncob products, NOI, not further processed than crushed/cut/ground — NMFC 53910 — Class 55,” and include the specific packaging (bags, boxes, or drums).
- Use sift‑proof, tear‑resistant packaging; line bags or boxes with poly to control dust. Unitize on clean 40x48 pallets, add corner boards, and apply stretch wrap with a top sheet.
- Keep product dry and off the floor. Request a clean, dry van and avoid loading near liquids or strong odors that could contaminate absorbent corncob material.
- Confirm the product isn’t pelletized, chemically treated, or blended beyond crushed/cut/ground; otherwise it may not qualify under this item (see Note 53912) and could be reclassified.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 55 can lower LTL rates versus higher-class organics, improving landed cost for absorbent media, tumbling/polishing, or bedding producers.
- Non-hazardous status simplifies carrier selection and avoids hazmat surcharges, documentation burdens, and limited-capacity lanes.
- Accurate NOI description and packaging details reduce reclass/inspection fees and claim risk from dust leakage or torn bags.
- Standardized pallets of bags, boxes, or drums speed cross-dock handling, cutting dwell time and accessorials from spills or repack.
