How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm NMFC 54020 and Class 0 on quotes and the BOL; note contents as casketed human or animal remains in a wooden shipping box.
- Use a rigid wooden shipping box sized to the casket or burial case; block and brace internally and mark Do Not Stack and This Side Up.
- Pre-arrange with the carrier’s special services team for limited handling, appointment delivery to funeral homes or airports, and protection from extreme temperatures.
- Include required documents: burial-transit permit, consignee contact, and any seal numbers for chain of custody; no hazardous placards are needed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
