NMFC Description Class
54100.00 COTTON:

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm the class before tendering: list the commodity as “Cotton” with the package type (bales, bags, boxes) and request written carrier approval since the entry shows Class N/A.
  2. Capture density and packaging details in quotes: include bale count, dimensions, weight per bale, wrap type, and strapping. Example: compressed bale ~54×21×35 in, ~480–500 lb.
  3. Contain fibers and stabilize the load: fully wrap bales (woven poly or burlap), add corner protectors, and band to a 48×40 pallet with 4‑way entry to speed cross-dock handling.
  4. Guard against moisture and odors: use top covers or slip sheets, keep away from liquids and strong-smelling freight (chemicals, spices), and note “Odor Sensitive” on the BOL.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Reduce reclass and rebills by documenting Class N/A and obtaining carrier confirmation up front, keeping invoices predictable.
  • Lower claims risk with proper containment that minimizes lint shed, snagging, and moisture exposure during LTL transfers.
  • Faster handling and fewer accessorials when cotton bales are palletized to standard footprints and clearly labeled for forklift access.
  • More competitive quotes when density, stackability, and packaging details are provided, helping carriers price accurately.
