How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. State NMFC 54410 and Class 50 on the BOL and mark non-hazardous; example: 50 lb bags on 40x48 pallets, shrink-wrapped with a top sheet to contain fines.
  2. Stabilize light, bulky pallets with slip sheets and corner boards; cap and stretch to reduce sifting, and keep stack height under 48 inches to prevent compression.
  3. Control moisture: use poly-lined bags or pallet covers, avoid floor-loading, and request dry-van service with “Keep Dry” notes during rainy forecasts.
  4. Plan stowage away from odor- or dust-sensitive freight; if bag strength is moderate, add “Do Not Top Load” and request dust-tight handling.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Class 50 pricing lowers LTL spend on bulky, low-value feed fiber, improving delivered cost per ton.
  • Single fixed class simplifies quoting and dispatch, cutting reclass risk and dispute time.
  • Non-hazardous status removes hazmat fees and widens carrier options for rural and ag lanes.
  • Better bagging and palletizing reduce shrink and claims, strengthening OTIF reliability to feed mills and dairies.
