How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Pack rolls or tapes in sturdy boxes with release liners so adhesive faces don’t bond; add edge guards and core plugs to prevent crushing.
  2. Palletize boxes tightly with stretch wrap and two cross-bands; avoid overhang to keep asphalt- or tar-coated materials from deforming under load.
  3. Control temperature during transit and storage; keep away from heat sources that can soften asphalt coatings or cause adhesive bleed.
  4. For jobsite deliveries, label by width and length (e.g., 6 in x 100 ft tape) and place the heaviest cartons low on the pallet to reduce tip risk.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 60 simplifies rating and avoids density disputes, reducing reclass fees and speeding up LTL quotes.
  • Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and avoids hazmat surcharges, cutting total landed cost.
  • Box-friendly packaging improves cube utilization and stacking, lowering handling touches and damage claims for coated films and tapes.
  • Clear NMFC mapping for asphalt/tar compositions and adhesive plastic films helps procurement standardize SKUs and negotiate predictable freight rates.
