Notes
Note 55011: NOTE-Applies only on articles manufactured solely by a blanking or stamping process.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify density before tendering: divide total boxed weight by total cubic feet (e.g., 900 lb over 20 cu ft = 45 PCF) to confirm ≥30 PCF for Class 60.
- Use strong corrugated boxes (double-wall) with dividers to protect edges and burrs on stampings; add VCI paper or poly liners to limit oxidation.
- Palletize boxed units for LTL: keep cartons square on the pallet, band and wrap tightly so heavy metal parts cannot shift or crush corners.
- On the BOL, state: NMFC 55010, cupro-nickel blanks/stampings, boxed, ≥30 PCF, Class 60, plus piece count and actual weight per carton to avoid reclass.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 60 rating on dense, boxed cupro-nickel lowers cost per pound versus lighter, bulkier classes—often improving LTL rate competitiveness.
- Clear density threshold (≥30 PCF) and defined packaging (boxes) reduce inspection disputes, chargebacks, and reclass fees.
- Durable boxing and interior protection cut damage on precision stampings, protecting margin and avoiding line shutdowns in marine and HVAC builds.
- Right-sizing cartons to maintain ≥30 PCF preserves Class 60; if density slips, rating may rise and increase freight spend.
