How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm density is 30+ pcf in the final package. Example: a 1,000 lb pallet at 40×48×20 in cubes at ~22.2 ft³, yielding ~45 pcf—qualifies for Class 60.
- Package heavy castings/forgings in crates or on sturdy skids with banding, edge protectors, and stretch wrap. Right-size the crate to avoid excess cube that lowers density.
- Add corrosion control for cupro-nickel (VCI paper, desiccant, sealed liner) to prevent surface staining during humid or marine transits; keep metal parts blocked and braced to stop metal-to-metal abrasion.
- List on the BOL: “NMFC 55020, Cupro-Nickel Castings/Forgings NOI, packaged, Class 60,” plus weight, piece count, and measured dimensions. Avoid mixing parts with different densities on one pallet.
