How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Package by form: long rods/bars in reinforced crates with blocking and steel banding; plates/sheets with edge guards and interleaving; ingots/pigs in tight, blocked boxes to stop shifting.
- Mark paperwork clearly: list alloy (e.g., 70/30 or 90/10), form and count, and print NMFC 55040, Class 60 on the BOL. Provide actual gross weight for accurate LTL quotes.
- Plan handling for dense freight: use runners or a pallet base under heavy crates for 4‑way forklift entry, keep everything within the crate footprint, and avoid overhang.
- Flag special dimensions: note any lengths over 96 inches to pre‑approve long freight handling and potential linear‑foot or over‑length accessorials.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs with fixed Class 60—no density math, fewer reclass fees, and faster spot quotes.
- One NMFC item covers multiple forms (ingot, plate, rod, strip, wire), simplifying SKUs and BOLs for mixed shipments.
- Non‑hazardous status broadens carrier options and reduces compliance steps, accelerating tender to pickup.
- Proper crating and blocking minimize bend, edge, and surface damage—lower claims, less scrap, and fewer reships.
