Classification Details

NMFC Description Class

Notes

Note 55022: NOTE-Applies only on articles manufactured solely by a casting or forging process.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm density is 30+ pcf in the final package. Example: a 1,000 lb pallet at 40×48×20 in cubes at ~22.2 ft³, yielding ~45 pcf—qualifies for Class 60.
  2. Package heavy castings/forgings in crates or on sturdy skids with banding, edge protectors, and stretch wrap. Right-size the crate to avoid excess cube that lowers density.
  3. Add corrosion control for cupro-nickel (VCI paper, desiccant, sealed liner) to prevent surface staining during humid or marine transits; keep metal parts blocked and braced to stop metal-to-metal abrasion.
  4. List on the BOL: “NMFC 55020, Cupro-Nickel Castings/Forgings NOI, packaged, Class 60,” plus weight, piece count, and measured dimensions. Avoid mixing parts with different densities on one pallet.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Class 60 rating at 30+ pcf typically delivers lower LTL rates than lighter classes—ideal for dense cupro-nickel components.
  • Clear density documentation reduces reclass and inspection charges, protecting margins and shortening dispute cycles.
  • Robust packaging and blocking minimize damage claims on heavy metal parts, preserving finish and reducing rework costs.
  • Standardizing to compact, high-density packs helps marine, desalination, and valve OEMs hit Class 60 consistently for predictable budgeting.
