How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Unitize scrap into tight packages using steel strapping or wire; add corner protectors. Example: 40x48-inch strapped bundles on pallets, no loose pieces.
  2. Declare on the BOL: "Cupro-nickel scrap, in packages, NMFC 55050, Class 55" and list the package count plus gross weight per package for safe handling.
  3. Keep loads free of liquids, batteries, dirt, or mixed alloys that could trigger reclassification. Use liners or shrink to limit moisture and corrosion.
  4. Photograph each package and label with alloy notes (e.g., 70/30 Cu-Ni) and package IDs. This speeds inspections and reduces OS&D disputes.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Class 55 on dense scrap often yields lower LTL rates than higher classes, cutting per-pound costs from yards to refineries and foundries.
  • Non-hazardous status removes hazmat surcharges and broadens carrier options, improving lane coverage and bidding leverage.
  • Fixed Class 55 (not density-based) cuts reclass risk and audit delays; predictable billing strengthens scrap margin forecasting.
  • Unitized packages improve dock throughput and reduce damage, lowering detention and boosting cycle times on recurring runs.
