How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm true empty status and document it. Provide an attestation or purge certificate showing no pressure, no propellant residue, and removal of igniters or valves if applicable.
- Stabilize the round shape to prevent rolling. Use V-blocks, wood cradles, or rack systems on a 48x40 pallet, then block, wedge, and band with steel or heavy poly straps.
- Protect metal edges and ports. Cap openings, add corner protectors under straps, and wrap to contain loose parts or small brackets from JATO assemblies.
- Label clearly on freight and BOL: “Empty JATO Steel Cylinders — NMFC 55340, Class 70, Non-Haz.” Request no-stack or top-load-only if walls are thin or parts are delicate.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 70—no density math, fewer reclass risks, and cleaner audits.
- Non-hazardous status widens carrier options and avoids hazmat fees, cutting total landed cost.
- Proper cradling and banding reduce damage claims on cylindrical steel parts, protecting schedules and budgets.
- Clear commodity descriptions speed dock handling and inspections, improving pickup reliability and transit times.
