Notes

Note 55362: NOTE-Will not apply on dairy products which have been prepared by a freezing-dehydration method. Such products will be classified per item 76850.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Identify the dairy type and condition (fluid milk, cheese, yogurt, powders) and map it to NMFC item 55362 or 55363 for the exact rating.
  2. Declare temperature targets on the BOL, e.g., 34–40°F; book refrigerated LTL or use insulated shippers with gel packs for short transit lanes.
  3. Package to prevent leaks: sealed primary containers, lined cartons, stretch-wrapped and banded pallets, plus absorbent pads for weeping products.
  4. Reference the correct NMFC sub-item (not 55360) on the BOL with package count and total weight; mark Perishable and avoid weekend dwell times.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate sub-item selection avoids reclass fees and rating disputes.
  • Clear cold-chain notes increase carrier acceptance and on-time performance.
  • Leak-resistant packaging reduces claims and protects shelf-life and brand.
  • Right-size reefer use to transit time to control costs without spoilage risk.
