Notes
Note 55362: NOTE-Will not apply on dairy products which have been prepared by a freezing-dehydration method. Such products will be classified per item 76850.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify the dairy type and condition (fluid milk, cheese, yogurt, powders) and map it to NMFC item 55362 or 55363 for the exact rating.
- Declare temperature targets on the BOL, e.g., 34–40°F; book refrigerated LTL or use insulated shippers with gel packs for short transit lanes.
- Package to prevent leaks: sealed primary containers, lined cartons, stretch-wrapped and banded pallets, plus absorbent pads for weeping products.
- Reference the correct NMFC sub-item (not 55360) on the BOL with package count and total weight; mark Perishable and avoid weekend dwell times.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
