How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Quote at fixed Class 100. List packaging as “packages” and note prepaid terms on the BOL: “NMFC 55620 — Ice Cream, prepaid, in packages.”
- Use rigid insulated cartons or coolers with sealed liners, gel packs or dry ice sized to transit time. Mark “Keep Frozen” and “Perishable” on each carton.
- Book temperature-controlled LTL or reefer service and request tight pickup/delivery windows to avoid weekend holds and cross-dock delays.
- Palletize with corner boards and stretch wrap, leaving some airflow. Avoid overhang and stack by case strength to minimize crush and thaw risk.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with a fixed Class 100—no density calculations or surprise reclasses.
- Faster quoting and tendering since the description cleanly maps to prepaid packaged ice cream.
- Lower spoilage and claim rates when cold-chain packaging and scheduling are followed, reducing total landed cost.
- Supports prepaid billing workflows for brands and DTC shippers, simplifying accounting and customer service.
