How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use double-wall cartons sized close to the frame or print; add edge guards, foam corners, glassine, and tape an “X” over glazing if present.
- Weigh each box and estimate cubic feet to determine density; reduce void space and oversize cartons to keep the density favorable for rating.
- On the BOL, cite NMFC 56165, packaging “boxes,” and a released value not over $25 per lb; note whether items are framed or unframed for handling.
- Shipping multiples? Inner-box each piece, then master-pack with suspension or honeycomb panels; mark This Side Up and Do Not Lay Flat.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Density-based rating lets you right-size cartons and padding to improve class and lower LTL charges without changing carriers.
- Released value up to $25/lb clarifies liability and helps prevent disputes; pair with third-party cargo insurance for higher-value artwork.
- Standard boxed packaging is widely accepted by LTL and art-specialist carriers, speeding tender, pickup, and claims resolution.
- Correct NMFC citation reduces reclass fees, and better protection cuts damages—fewer claims and steadier cash flow for galleries and auctions.
