How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm each item is a single-piece paper or paperboard print, cut-out, or silhouette and ship them in boxes; avoid bundling multi-piece kits under this code.
- Protect flat pieces from bending: add rigid chipboard on both sides, use corner protectors, and choose 200# test or 32 ECT cartons labeled “Do Not Bend.”
- Palletize with no overhang, add a slip sheet and top cap, and stretch-wrap with light tension to prevent edge curl or crush on thin paper stock.
- On the BOL, list NMFC 56180, Class 70, and carton count; example line: “Prints/Silhouettes, one-piece paperboard, boxed, NMFC 56180, Class 70.”
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 70 rating (non-density) streamlines quoting and reduces reclass risk for flat paper decorations.
- Boxed, non-hazardous goods minimize accessorials and claims, cutting total landed cost for seasonal campaigns and retail rollouts.
- Standard packaging in boxes fits carrier handling norms, improving cross-dock flow and delivery performance for time-sensitive promotions.
- Clear NMFC alignment helps procurement benchmark rates and lock in consistent LTL pricing across print runs and repeat orders.
