How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the product fits this article: coin or currency-operated machines and coin-changing devices shipped in rigid boxes. Use double-wall cartons or factory boxes with dense foam or molded inserts to immobilize the unit.
- Prep the machine before boxing: remove all coins/cash boxes, secure or remove hoppers and bill validators, cap connectors, and bag keys, fasteners, and bezels. Cushion protruding coin slots and display panels to prevent impact.
- Palletize the boxed unit upright. Strap or band the box to a pallet with corner protectors, add tilt/shock indicators, and mark serial numbers on the carton and BOL for traceability.
- On paperwork, list NMFC 57150, Class 85, packaged in boxes, non-hazardous. Density is not used for this class, but provide accurate weight and outer dimensions for rating and capacity planning.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 85 eliminates density-based surprises, reducing reclass and inspection fees for coin changers and coin-operated devices.
- Non-hazardous status and boxed packaging speed carrier acceptance, helping secure better LTL pickup windows and fewer accessorial delays.
- Proper boxing and internal bracing cut damage risks to validators, hoppers, and displays, lowering claim costs and downtime for laundromats, arcades, and transit kiosks.
- Consistent mapping to NMFC 57150 streamlines TMS quoting across carriers, enabling faster rate shopping and clearer landed cost forecasting.
