How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use rigid, double‑wall boxes (44 ECT or 275#) with inner partitions or trays so steel rims don’t bruise the coated fabric bellows; poly-bag each piece and add desiccant.
- Palletize cartons in a tight footprint, add a top frame or cap sheet, then strap around the pallet—not across the bellows area—to prevent compression damage.
- Mark cartons “Do Not Crush” and “Keep Dry,” and place orientation arrows; coated fabric is abrasion-sensitive and steel edges can rust if moisture intrudes.
- On the BOL, list NMFC 57280, Class 150, non-hazardous, plus carton count and pallet quantity; request ‘no top load’ when possible for added protection.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 150 simplifies rating—no density math—so quotes and budgeting for LTL lanes stay predictable.
- Robust boxing and pallet practices cut abrasion and crush claims, protecting sealing performance and reducing field failures for meter OEMs and utilities.
- Non-hazardous status speeds carrier acceptance and avoids hazmat fees, documentation delays, and special handling surcharges.
- Efficient pallet builds (e.g., 40x48) improve cube utilization and minimize accessorials tied to oversize or unstable freight.
