How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State the commodity clearly on the BOL: “Dollies, pipe welding, steel, other than electrical — NMFC 57500, Class 70.” This avoids reclass and inspection delays.
- Stabilize mobility parts: lock or block casters, chock wheels, and band the dolly to a sturdy pallet. Add edge protectors under steel strapping to prevent scuffs.
- Protect contact points and pipe cradles with corrugated pads or foam, and cap sharp steel edges. Use stretch wrap plus two steel or poly straps through the frame.
- Load for balance: center the frame over the pallet stringers, keep stack height low, and separate multiple dollies with wood dunnage so they don’t interlock or shift.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating: fixed Class 70 means quoting and budgeting are straightforward, with less exposure to density-based reclass fees.
- Lower claims risk: proper blocking of casters and banding to a pallet reduces rolling and tip-over damage during cross-dock transfers.
- Simplified compliance: non-hazardous steel equipment avoids hazmat surcharges and extra paperwork, accelerating tender-to-pickup timelines.
- Operational efficiency: pallet-ready preparation lets carriers forklift quickly, cutting handling time and improving on-time performance for fab shops and field crews.
