How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 57450 and Class 175 on the BOL, and note KD components: steel joist frame, jack, axle, and rubber-tired wheels.
- Place the long steel joists on timber runners or a full-length skid; band at three points with edge protectors and bag all small hardware.
- Carton the wheel/tire sets and the jack/axle unit separately; label as “Do Not Roll” and keep strap paths clear of jacks and hubs.
- Share accurate piece count and overall skid size (e.g., a long 144 x 48 in skid) for LTL quotes, and prearrange liftgate or limited-access delivery for marinas.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 175 with no density rule speeds quoting and reduces reclass disputes.
- KD configuration lowers cube versus fully built docks, improving carrier acceptance and minimizing damage risk.
- Non-hazardous materials streamline tendering across standard LTL networks with fewer restrictions.
- Clear commodity naming (portable boat dock, steel frame) supports accurate rate shopping and predictable accessorial planning.
