How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 57590, Class 85 and name the pieces (doubletrees, eveners, neckyokes, singletrees) on the BOL to avoid reclass and vague commodity issues.
- Protect the finish: wrap each wooden bar in foam or kraft, add corrugated edge guards at drilled ends, then bundle pairs with poly strap before palletizing.
- Palletize tight: alternate orientations to stay within a 48x40 footprint, add a plywood top sheet, and secure with two straps plus stretch‑wrap.
- For longer neckyokes or singletrees (often 36–60 in), block the ends with lumber, avoid pallet overhang, and label both ends for safer cross‑dock handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 85 rating removes density calculations, speeding quotes and reducing billing corrections.
- Non‑hazardous finished wood avoids hazmat paperwork and surcharges, broadening carrier options.
- Bundling multiple pieces per pallet boosts handling efficiency and lowers cost per unit while reducing scuffs and OS&D.
- Clear NMFC identification minimizes reclass risk and invoice disputes for farm, carriage, and restoration suppliers.
