How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use rigid cartons or wood crates sized to stop slide movement; block and pad drawer slides, handles, and corners with foam and corrugated.
- Palletize and secure: place boxes or crates on a pallet, band and stretch wrap; keep drawers upright to avoid rail distortion and don’t double-stack heavy all‑steel units.
- Label by material—“Steel” or “Steel/Wood”—and include piece count; print NMFC 57610, Class 85 on the BOL for clean, consistent rating.
- For multi-drawer sets, bag loose rails and screws inside the primary pack and add desiccant to limit rust during long hauls or humid storage.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 delivers predictable quotes and minimizes reclass or inspection fees.
- Boxed/crated requirement reduces scratches, bent flanges, and return costs, improving claim ratios.
- Clear NMFC mapping streamlines LTL routing so you compare carriers on service and price, not uncertainty.
- Consolidating cartons into a single crate or pallet cuts handling touches and accessorials, lowering delivered cost for shop-fit and casework projects.
