Notes

Note 58542: NOTE-Shipper must certify on shipping orders and bills of lading at time of shipment the actual value per pound of the property or the value group in item 58540 embracing the actual value per pound of the property. If the shipper fails to so certify the actual value, shipment will not be accepted, but if the shipment is inadvertently accepted, charges will initially be assessed on the basis of the class for the highest valuation provided in item 58540. Upon proof of lower actual value, freight charges will be adjusted accordingly.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Match packaging to product form: use poly-lined corrugated boxes for salts/crystals, and Package 2213-compliant boxes or drums with leak-proof closures for liquid bubble bath.
  2. Weigh each handling unit after final pack-out and record gross and tare; this item uses a weight-based class, so accurate per-piece weights drive rating and prevent reclass.
  3. Control fragrance and moisture: seal inner bags, use odor-barrier liners, and stretch-wrap with a top sheet to avoid scent transfer and humidity damage in transit.
  4. Palletize tightly on 48x40 pallets with corner boards; cap heavy stacks at safe heights to prevent crushing of boxed personal care goods.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Weight-based classification streamlines quoting—no density calculations—reducing time to rate and improving TMS automation.
  • Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat paperwork and surcharges, lowering total landed cost for retail and spa replenishment.
  • Using recognized Package 2213 packaging lowers leakage and contamination claims, protecting margins and on-time performance.
  • Clear NMFC alignment helps prevent costly carrier reclass fees and reduces disputes, stabilizing LTL freight rates.
