How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 58670 and “Condiments, NOI, for animal feeds” on the BOL. Use fixed Class 85; no density calculation is required.
- Pack ground botanicals in strong, taped, double-wall boxes with a moisture barrier liner to prevent aroma transfer and clumping (e.g., 25–40 lb cartons).
- Palletize boxes on 40×48 pallets, use corner boards and stretch wrap, and mark Keep Dry/No Top Stack to protect fine powders from compression and moisture.
- Label each carton with product name, net weight, and “Non-Hazardous.” Include lot codes for feed-traceability requested by mills or distributors.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 simplifies quoting and reduces reweigh/reclass fees, improving rate predictability for recurring LTL lanes.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and expands carrier options, cutting total landed cost.
- Boxed, pallet-ready packaging lowers damage and spill risk on fine botanical powders, reducing claims and reship costs.
- Clear NMFC alignment streamlines onboarding with feed mills and animal nutrition distributors, speeding turnaround on purchase orders.
