How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State the item clearly on the BOL: “Hog Bile, crude, liquid — NMFC 58860, Class 70,” and note packaging as boxes or drums to avoid reclass delays.
- For boxes, place sealed HDPE jerricans inside double‑wall cartons with a poly liner and absorbent pads; tape seams, add orientation arrows, and label “Liquid.”
- Use tight‑head plastic drums with tamper‑evident closures for bulk volumes; line pallets with a spill tray or drum liner and secure with straps plus full stretch‑wrap.
- Keep away from foodstuffs and paper goods to control odor transfer; ship ambient or cool as required by your process, and mark “Do Not Freeze” if cold weather is a risk.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 simplifies quoting and budgeting—no density calculations and fewer reclass disputes.
- Non‑hazmat status removes hazmat fees and special driver requirements, widening carrier options and lanes.
- Leak‑tight packaging prevents spill claims and cleanup charges, protecting margins and service performance.
- Drum or palletized jerrican handling speeds cross‑dock transfers, reducing touch points and potential OS&D costs.
