How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List on the BOL: “Contact Lens Care Kits, NMFC 58890, Class 70, in boxes.” If a carrier requests it, reference the related note for item 58891.
- Pack kits upright in sturdy boxes with inner dividers for bottles, leakproof poly bags, and cushioning. Mark “Liquids” and use orientation arrows to reduce spill risk.
- Palletize master cartons with no overhang, band and 360° stretch-wrap, and add a top sheet. Keep heavier cartons on the bottom to prevent crush damage.
- Avoid freeze exposure for solutions. Choose enclosed or temperature-aware services in winter, and include lot and expiration details on packing lists for traceability.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: Fixed Class 70 removes density disputes and reclass fees, streamlining quotes and audits.
- Lower compliance burden: Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and carrier restrictions for quicker tendering.
- Damage reduction: Boxed kit packaging supports safe consolidation and fewer leaks or breakages, lowering claim rates.
- Faster operations: Correct NMFC usage accelerates booking and receiving for optical retailers, clinics, and e-commerce fulfillment.
