How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm composition with the SDS, then apply the correct hazmat description and flammable labels; verify the proper UN/NA ID (e.g., UN1219 Isopropyl Alcohol or UN1987 Alcohols, n.o.s.) before tender.
- Pack bottles upright in sturdy corrugated boxes with dividers and absorbent liners, seal with solvent‑resistant tape, add orientation arrows, and segregate away from oxidizers and food items.
- State NMFC 59220, Class 65 on the BOL for every shipment; density is not needed for rating. Include a 24/7 emergency contact and keep SDS accessible for the driver and terminal.
- Palletize cartons tightly with corner boards and stretch wrap; avoid heat and ignition sources, cap stack height conservatively, and use ‘Do Not Double Stack’ cones if cartons are lightweight.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 65 rating minimizes reclass charges and dispute time, improving margin reliability on routine medical replenishments.
- Accurate hazmat identification reduces carrier refusals, avoids fines, and shortens terminal dwell times for faster delivery to clinics and hospitals.
- Boxed packaging streamlines LTL consolidation with other medical SKUs, improving cube utilization without triggering density audits.
- Clear NMFC mapping (59220) speeds quoting and TMS automation, cutting manual checks and accelerating award-to-pickup cycle time.
