How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use sealed, poly-lined paper or woven polypropylene bags, then stretch-wrap and strap on 40x48 pallets to keep kelp dry and prevent bag abrasion.
- Keep away from odors and chemicals; request odor-sensitive segregation so seaweed ingredients don’t absorb smells from detergents, paints, or solvents nearby.
- Note the fixed rating on paperwork: NMFC 59280, Class 60, Non-Hazardous. Include lot/batch numbers if destined for nutraceutical or cosmetic production.
- Stack bags in a brick pattern with corner protection; cap with a top sheet and avoid overhanging pallets to reduce punctures and sift-outs in transit.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 simplifies quoting and often lowers LTL spend compared to higher classes, helping forecast landed costs for bulk ingredient programs.
- Non-hazardous status removes hazmat fees and special handling, speeding up carrier acceptance and reducing administrative overhead.
- Bagged, palletized format cubes efficiently, improving trailer utilization and minimizing reclass or density disputes—fewer surprises on invoices.
- Single NMFC for dried or ground kelp streamlines SKU setup and training, reducing rating errors and chargebacks across repeat shipments.
