How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 59310 and Class 500 on the BOL, and reference insulated containers per Note 59312 so carriers recognize the fixed rating.
- Use cryogenic dry shippers or insulated overpacks, keep upright, and strap the dewar to a pallet with edge protectors. Block and brace to prevent tip-over.
- Pre-charge the dewar and verify static hold time exceeds total transit plus terminals. Avoid weekend handoffs and request no-storage routing when possible.
- Label clearly: “Frozen Bovine Semen—Non-Hazardous,” include straw count, handling marks like “Keep Upright/Do Not Invert,” and receiver contact for appointment.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with a fixed Class 500 rating, eliminating density disputes and reducing reclass fees on LTL moves.
- Lower claims risk by using compliant insulated packaging and upright handling, protecting high-value straws during terminal touches.
- Faster quoting and tendering since no cube or density calculations are required, speeding decisions for time-sensitive breeding programs.
- Consistent classification across lanes and carriers, simplifying multi-ranch or AI center distribution and return logistics for reusable dewars.
