How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm product fit: hand soap in pump dispensing units packed in boxes (not bulk refills or sanitizer). See Note item 59364 for scope alignment.
  2. Determine PCF: use the outer-carton cube from your supplier spec or packing list and the actual box weight to calculate density for Item 170 classing.
  3. Prepare packaging for liquids: keep pumps upright, secure heads with tape or clips, use induction seals or foil liners, poly-bag each inner, and add orientation arrows.
  4. Palletize to prevent leaks and reclass: no overhang, use corner boards, stretch-wrap with a top sheet, avoid freezing temps, and list NMFC 59363 (non-haz) on the BOL.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Density-driven pricing can lower your freight class when PCF is high, cutting LTL costs on compact, heavy case packs.
  • Non-hazardous designation removes hazmat fees and simplifies carrier acceptance and terminal handling.
  • Leak-preventive packing reduces OS&D claims and minimizes reinspections or reclass charges under Item 170.
  • Clear NMFC and Note references speed audits, reduce disputes, and improve transit reliability for medical/personal care replenishment.
