How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the item meets 7 gauge or thicker using a gauge chart appropriate to the material type (steel, aluminum, etc.), and note the thickness on your BOL.
- Choose packaging by form: small cut pieces go in boxes; stacks or bundles can ship as packages with banding and edge guards; a single heavy plate may ship loose if securely banded and labeled.
- Select the appropriate class within 85–100 based on handling risk: tightly packaged, protected pieces typically qualify for the lower class, while loose items with exposed edges trend higher.
- Document clearly: list NMFC 60160, indicate box/package/loose, include piece count and total weight, and add handling marks like Heavy or Do Not Stack when applicable.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Reduce reclass and inspection fees by matching one of the two available classes to your actual packaging method and handling profile.
- Cut damage claims with edge and face protection on thick-gauge items, improving on-time, in-full delivery performance.
- Speed up quoting and tendering because no density calculation is required and the class range is predefined (85–100).
- Access broad carrier options and avoid hazmat surcharges thanks to the non-hazardous status of this commodity entry.
