Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
60320.00 Easels, in packages, subject to Item 170 and having a density in pounds per cubic foot of:
60320.01 Less than 4 250
60320.02 4 but less than 6 150
60320.03 6 but less than 8 125
60320.04 8 or greater 85

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Calculate pounds per cubic foot from the packed carton: weight ÷ (L×W×H ÷ 1728). List the PCF and “NMFC 60320, Item 170” on the BOL.
  2. Use rigid, double‑wall cartons or reinforced sleeves. Cap leg tips and hinges, add corner guards, and foam-wrap to prevent punctures through the box.
  3. Ship folding or multi-piece easels as flat packs on a pallet. Strap and stretch-wrap tightly to stop shifting and keep heights uniform for stackability.
  4. Do not send loose bundles or soft cases; Item 170 requires packages. For retail-ready boxes, choose an appropriate crush-test rating and add “Do Not Crush” labels.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Boost PCF with right-sized packaging to qualify for a lower freight class within the 85–250 range and cut LTL costs.
  • Accurate density on paperwork reduces carrier reclassifications, inspections, and surprise rebills.
  • Impact-resistant packaging protects delicate tips and hinges, lowering claims and keeping store openings and events on schedule.
  • Palletized flat packs improve cube utilization and stackability, often lowering per-CWT rates and speeding cross-dock handling.
