Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
60340.00 Egg Case or Egg Carrier Fillers or Flats, pulpboard or wood pulp, KD or nested, or Cup Flats, nested, in packages, or in egg cases completely filled 55

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Bundle nested flats tightly with stretch wrap and 2–3 straps; add a top cap and corner boards to prevent crush damage and top-loading.
  2. Keep units dry—pulpboard absorbs moisture. Use poly bag liners or full shrink overwrap when routing through humid or refrigerated lanes.
  3. Palletize on 48x40 with no overhang; cap height around 54–60 inches to avoid leaning and cubic-capacity surcharges; mark Do Not Stack if uncapped.
  4. If shipping inside filled egg cases, confirm cartons are fully loaded so flats don’t shift; list NMFC 60340 Class 55 on the BOL for clean inspections.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 55 removes density math, streamlines quoting, and reduces reclass fees.
  • Bulky, lightweight flats consolidate well in LTL, improving cube use and lowering cost per unit.
  • Non-hazardous status accelerates tendering and limits special-handling accessorials.
  • Explicit NMFC 60340 labeling improves carrier acceptance and minimizes inspection delays.
