How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate pounds per cubic foot from the packed carton: weight ÷ (L×W×H ÷ 1728). List the PCF and “NMFC 60320, Item 170” on the BOL.
- Use rigid, double‑wall cartons or reinforced sleeves. Cap leg tips and hinges, add corner guards, and foam-wrap to prevent punctures through the box.
- Ship folding or multi-piece easels as flat packs on a pallet. Strap and stretch-wrap tightly to stop shifting and keep heights uniform for stackability.
- Do not send loose bundles or soft cases; Item 170 requires packages. For retail-ready boxes, choose an appropriate crush-test rating and add “Do Not Crush” labels.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Boost PCF with right-sized packaging to qualify for a lower freight class within the 85–250 range and cut LTL costs.
- Accurate density on paperwork reduces carrier reclassifications, inspections, and surprise rebills.
- Impact-resistant packaging protects delicate tips and hinges, lowering claims and keeping store openings and events on schedule.
- Palletized flat packs improve cube utilization and stackability, often lowering per-CWT rates and speeding cross-dock handling.
