How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle nested pulp flats tightly in corrugated cartons, and add a poly liner or stretch wrap to keep out moisture. Example: 100-count bundles, ~25 lb per carton.
- Palletize with edge boards and light strapping to prevent crush. Use a pallet cap sheet and mark Do Not Stack if cartons deform easily.
- Quote at Class 125 with actual carton count, dimensions, and weight; density does not change the class. Example: 5 cartons, 24x16x12 in, 22 lb each.
- List “molded wood pulp egg filler flats” on the BOL and confirm non-hazmat to avoid reclassification as foam or plastic trays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 125 simplifies rating and helps avoid reclass fees or disputes.
- Nested packaging reduces cubic space, improving LTL cost per shipment.
- Moisture control and edge protection lower damage claims and reship costs.
- Clear BOL descriptions speed inspections and shorten dock handling times.
