Notes

Note 61111: NOTE-Applies on industrial cabinets, enclosures, frames, housings or racks designed to protect or house rack-mount, network or related equipment. Units may be stand-alone or configured into a modular system to form multi-bay assemblies.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Choose packaging to match the build: double‑wall boxes for smaller enclosed cabinets; full crates with internal blocking for open‑frame racks or units without side panels.
  2. Remove shelves, breakers, and loose hardware; bag, label, and secure inside the enclosure. Protect edges and doors with foam corner guards and wrap to prevent scuffs.
  3. Mount the boxed or crated unit on a pallet, band in two directions, add tip‑n‑tell or shock indicators, and mark center of gravity and “Do Not Stack” if applicable.
  4. Reference NMFC 61110 and note items 61111, 61112, and 61113 on the BOL. Specify packaging type (box or crate) and list exterior dimensions and weight for accurate quotes.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fewer reclasses and surprise fees by aligning cabinets and racks to the correct NMFC item and documented packaging method.
  • Lower damage rates for high‑value electrical enclosures through crating/boxing standards that protect rails, doors, and mounted components.
  • Faster quoting and dock handling because carriers recognize the commodity and packaging, improving pickup reliability and transit visibility.
  • Scalable rollouts for panel shops, OEMs, and data center integrators with consistent pack methods that stabilize LTL rates across locations.
