Note 61224: NOTE-Does not apply on raceways designed for burying in concrete; for class, see item 51055.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the item is aluminum and shipped in packages as required by Note 61222; include this note on the BOL to prevent reclass.
- Bundle long ladder or wire-mesh cable trays with wide straps and corner protectors; add wood skids so forklifts lift without bending the side rails.
- Cap sharp ends and wrap with foam or corrugate to avoid denting and surface marring, a common issue with extruded aluminum raceways.
- Label orientation and handling (Do Not Stack/Long Freight) and keep bundle length within carrier limits—e.g., 10–12 ft for standard LTL—to avoid overlength fees.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NMFC 61220 usage reduces reclass and surprise accessorials, stabilizing LTL quotes for project bids in data centers and industrial builds.
- Packaging to spec (in packages) lowers damage risk on lightweight, rigid aluminum pieces, strengthening claim defensibility and cutting replacement costs.
- Clear classification under the Electrical Equipment Group improves carrier acceptance and speeds dock handling for scheduled installs.
- Non-hazardous designation simplifies paperwork and expands carrier options, helping secure competitive freight rates during tight timelines.
